Johan G Winther
For nearly ten years now, Johan Gustavsson Winther has been recording and performing under the Tsukimono moniker, creating a body of work characterized by change, forward motion and heart more than any specific sound or style.
From beautiful drones to harsh noise to acoustic guitar-ditties and pop-tinged weirdness, JGW represents a strain of artists never content, never satisfied with what they’ve got going at the moment, always moving on, for better or worse. The sort of artist it takes a little effort to
get into and to follow, a rare thing these days when most artists do all they can to be easily understandable, likable and categorized.
JGW has performed numerous shows all around Europe and Japan, both solo and as part of one of his many other projects and bands such as Scraps Of Tape, Blessings, Viktor Sjöberg New Jazz Ensemble, Alina and many more. His solo-liveshow is a constantly changing beast, more a place to develop and try new ideas than a showcasing of past efforts. What the sound/performance are to be are often site-specific or decided on-site or during the preceding days of the show.
His discography spans everything from self-released cd-rs to regular cd’s, vinyls, cassettes and more elaborate releases such as a winebottle/glass/cd-r-box and a wooden box with a tape + various photos. he has released his music on a wide range of labels including Slaapwel, Awkward Formats, Brian Records, Kning Disk, Release The Bats, Kalligrammofon, Structures Sonores, Komplott, Hockey Rawk, Hwem and Psychic Malmö etc…
Drawing influences from tibetan thangka paintings, pennsylvania dutch hex signs, contemporary tattoo-artists and various religious and esoteric artforms, JGW’s drawings and paintings often seek transcendence and the loss of self, the meaning and understanding of various symbols and ideas being explored through long, meditative sessions bent over the drawing table. The art is much connected to the more drone-based parts of his music.
